Precise, versatile waterjet cutting
Waterjet cutting is a cutting-edge technology that has revolutionized the field of industrial cutting. This is an industrial cutting technique that uses, as its name suggests, a high-pressure water jet, often mixed with abrasive particles, to cut a variety of materials. This method is renowned for its precision, versatility and ability to handle heat-sensitive materials. Used in a variety of sectors, it offers exceptional precision while cutting a wide range of materials.
Water for cutting?
Waterjet cutting is based on the use of an ultra-high-pressure jet of water, often mixed with abrasive particles to increase its effectiveness, known as the kinetic energy principle. A jet of water is accelerated to very high speeds using a high-pressure pump, typically between 4,000 and 6,000 bar. This water jet can then be directed at the material to be cut. To improve cutting performance, abrasive particles such as fine sand can be added to the water jet. These particles reinforce the cutting force, enabling the technology to cut harder materials such as metal and stone. Waterjet cutting offers extreme precision, enabling clean, detailed cuts without deformation or thermal damage to materials such as metal, plastic, stone, glass and even some composites. Unlike other cutting methods, which can produce harmful gases or hazardous waste, waterjet cutting is considered an environmentally-friendly option, as it does not generate toxic waste. Finally, since the process does not involve excessive heat, there are no heat-affected zones, which eliminates the risk of material deformation.
A technique used in a multitude of fields
Many industries use waterjet cutting techniques. The high precision and low cost of this cutting process make it particularly popular in the mechanical engineering industry. Railway and aeronautical companies, architects and artists can also use this cutting technique to design customized parts. Finally, many professionals in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors also exploit the very high precision of waterjet cutting. Mainly used in the industrial sector, waterjet cutting is ideal if you need to cut parts very precisely.
